R.S.V.P needed for Cooking Class May 19, 2021

Hi All,

We have a cooking class scheduled for Wednesday May 19th at The Kid’s Table from 5:00-6:00. Please RSVP as soon as possible if your girls would like to attend as we need to provide them with a count of those that will be in attendance. There will be no additional cost to you as this will be paid out of the troop funds and the girls will earn a patch for attending. Please let me know by next Wednesday if your girls would like to participate.

Have a great week everyone!

Outdoor meeting reminder 4/7 and extra activity interest survey.

Hello all,

I hope you all had a nice Easter. I wanted to remind you all that we will be meeting torrid at 5:00 pm for our usually scheduled meeting. With the weather now warming up I wanted to try to schedule an outdoor meeting at Wells Park.

There is a chance of rain but I think it’s worth the try. If it does look like the rain will come I will change it to a zoom meeting. If that happens I will send out an email no later than 3:30.

We will need to wear our masks of course but I think we all need the fresh air. Please let me know if anyone has any worries about an in person meeting. Also please confirm either way if your child will be able to attend in person.

The other thing I wanted to run by you is the desire to plan some extra activities for the girls. They missed out on so much this year that I did want to try to bring some fun back into our Girl Scout experience. I was hoping to schedule the following activities over the next couple of months if people are interested.

I was hoping to schedule an archery class at the American Indian Center, a cooking class at The Children’s table, and possibly even a horseback riding event at New Traditions Riding Academy in Palos Hills.

Please let me know which of the activities your child would be interested and comfortable attending. They would all be conducted in accordance with all social distance guidelines of course.

If interested please let me know what days are also better for you all. The archery and horseback riding are typically done on weekends whereas the cooking class can be conducted on a week night.

Projects to complete for Monitor award to be turned in next meeting.

Hello all,

As part of our journey work we talked the ways media is used by the community. I asked the girls to pick two people in their community circles outside of immediate family like friends, teachers, or neighbors to survey about their thoughts and feelings about media. These don’t have to be face to face interviews. They can be emailed, discussed over the phone, or however else you would be comfortable with them communicating to others. Please see the sample survey attached as a guideline for the girls to follow.

The second activity that I would like the girls to have completed and ready to discuss is an examination of a current news story. I would like them to find a story that interests them, and consider why it maters whether news is reliable or not. As they look over their chosen story I want them to see if they can identify any examples of spin, slant, or sensationalism, as well as the “hook” or human connection in the story. I would like them to decide whether they think the story fits into the sensational or trustworthy category.

Spin – to twist or form ” I can make something else out of this material”

Slant – to present in a way that conforms with a particular bias “I like this topic therefore, the tone of my writing is positive.”

Sensationalism – Events and topics in news stories are selected and worded to excite the greatest number of readers and viewers. “Click Bait”

Once they have completed and turned in these surveys and news article discussions they will have earned their Monitor award for the journey. They will need to have them completed and ready to discuss for our next meeting.

Please let me know if anyone has any questions. Thanks and have a great week!

COOKIE DELIVERY

Cookies Will be delivered to Second City Theater this Friday, February 12. This year we will being doing cookie delivery a little differently than in past years.

Because of the time constraints and the different protocols that Second City is requesting of us I will pick up the entire bulk order for the Cadette Troop and then making arrangements with parents to drop off your individual cookie orders to you through the weekend.

Parents please let me know what works best for you as far as drop off times for this coming weekend and into next week so we can find a date and time that works best for us both.
